Things went check here catastrophically wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to stop a tsunami with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the pieces and feeling the sting of this disaster.

This issue has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried just about everything to fix it, but nothing seems to be effective. At this point, it feels like we're toast. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a mess of epic proportions.

Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so awful that you can't help but burst out chuckling. It's like your brain tries to process the sheer magnitude of chaos and just resigns itself to fate, opting for laughter as a coping defense.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really hilarious. It's just plain bad. And the laughter you were experiencing morphs into a wistful, melancholic sound.
In the end, you are left with a sense of bewilderment. You start ruminating about the nature of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?

Dreadful Day Ever
It all started with a terrible case of uncontrollable hair. I couldn't figure it to look right. As I was dashing out the door, I fell and spilled all over the floor. To make matters worse, I was extremely behind schedule for work.

The rest of the day was an absolute nightmare. Everything. I couldn'tfocus.
By the time I got home, I was utterly defeated. This day, this horrific day will be forever remembered as a true disaster.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
